We sat down with her for a proper chat about what she's learned on the job, and what she wishes more people knew about keeping their gardens beautiful every season of the year.

Q: What's the most common mistake you see people make with their gardens?

Ruth: "Honestly, it's timing. People tend to only think about their garden when something's coming up, a big event, or when summer suddenly arrives and it looks nothing like they'd pictured. But gardens don't work like that, they need a little love regularly, not a mad dash to catch up. A ten minute check a couple of times a week beats a full day of catch up every few months."

Q: Are there specific areas people neglect without realising it?

Ruth: "Edging and drainage, mostly. The grass gets cut because that's the obvious job, but the edges around seating areas, the swimming pool, and borders grow out fast, and they make the whole space look untidy even when the grass itself is fine. Drainage is the other one people forget. If water isn't moving away from planted areas properly, you end up with root rot or waterlogged patches, and those are far harder to put right later than they would have been to prevent in the first place."

Q: What would you say to someone who feels overwhelmed by garden upkeep?

Ruth: "Start small, honestly. You don't need to overhaul the whole space in one weekend. Pick one area, get that sorted, then move on to the next. It's the same principle whether you're looking after your own garden or bringing in a bit of help. Trying to do everything at once is usually what makes people give up in the first place."

Q: What's your favourite part of working with clients?

Ruth: "Seeing the transformation over a season, not just a single visit. Gardens tell you a lot about how a family uses their outdoor space. Some want a low-maintenance garden so the kids have room to play. Others want structured borders and a bit more formality. I like being able to shape the garden around how people actually live in it, not just how it looks in a photo."
